Description

When Mary Jane Prince married Claude Queen in 1935, they united two of the most gifted musical families in their section of Appalachia. This film captured Mary Jane Queen at age ninety-two, still with a vivid recollection of the ballads, songs and lore learned in her childhood. Her community retains a keen sense of its own history, heritage and identity as here expressed in exuberant folk music played together with family and neighbors, outdoors on the porch.

Format: DVD Video • 28 minutes feature • 1 hour 6 minutes total media:

“Toes tapped and heads bobbed during the screening of ‘The Queen family,’ as members of one of North Carolina’s most revered musical families shared their brand of acoustic mountain music, quite literally from their back porch.”
— The News & Observer

Mary Jane Queen received the National Folk Heritage Award in 1993.
